As a great number of Bordeaux wines are highly renowned, as time passed many have attempted to rank them, according to the merit or quality of the wines. These rankings now exist as a vital part of the region’s consciousness.
Some of these classifications have been official, while others, such as personal classifications from wine critics, are not. The different districts of Bordeaux have adopted official classifications of their wines, at different periods in history, and using utilizing different criteria for wine grading. Although no single ranking or classification covers all of Bordeaux’s wines, three major classifications rule the bulk of them, namely the 1855 Classification, the Graves/ Pessac-Léognan Classification, and the St. Emilion Classification.
